  • How to interpret oral/written information relating to the lifting characteristics of the load
  • How to determine the weight of the lift (load plus lifting equipment)
  • The need to determine load construction to prevent load damage
  • Methods of estimating weights of loads without written information
  • Identification and selection of the appropriate type of lifting accessories for the task (chains, web slings, shackles, spreader beams etc)
  • Procedures for inspecting lifting accessories to see that it conforms to the statutory requirements
  • Procedures for isolating lifting accessories that fail to meet the statutory requirements
  • Procedures for reporting faults, to lifting equipment (cranes etc) outside the responsibilities of the slinger signaller
  • Methods of protecting loads being moved from damage (use of suitable packing)
  • Prevention of load being crushed by lifting accessories by use of spreader beams
  • Establish an agreed method of communication between slinger and crane operator
  • The need for using approved hand signals and/or the use of two way radio
  • Consideration given to environmental conditions

  • Explain the use of the safe lifting approval plan
  • Explain the characteristics of a load (centre of gravity, security, type etc)
  • Establish the type of crane required and the lifting capacity
  • Explain the effects of weather conditions (wind, snow, ice etc)
  • Explain and give understanding to the slinging arrangements (angle of slings, selection of slings, etc)
  • Explain how and when to use packing and how to attach tag lines
  • Explain appointed persons duties and responsibilities
  • Explain the duties and responsibilities of the slinger signaller
  • Explain and identify proximity hazards
  • Explain the reasons for understanding where the load is being lifted from and to
